EU and US confirming tech cooperation

EU and US tech cooperation

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has further underlined the key importance of our cooperation with the US on economic and technology issues, EU Commission´s vice president Margrethe Vestager said after the second meeting with the EU and US Trade and Technology Council (TTC).

The council was established in 2021 as a transatlantic diplomatic forum to coordinate technology and trade policy and to smoothen tech relationships after the EU was seen as implementing rules meant to limit the operations and increase control of big US-based tech companies. Big US tech companies have been critical to new EU rules to increase online competition and force big tech to fight misinformation and harmful content better.

Vestager said the ”cooperation goes beyond our reaction to the war. Together with our transatlantic partners, we can create a positive vision for our economies and for a democratic governance of the internet based on the dignity and integrity of the individual. When we act together, we can set the standards of tomorrow’s economy. We are joining forces and when two such determined partners take the lead, we can enable the tides to turn.”

After the meeting, the parties stressed “the central role of the TTC for the renewed transatlantic partnership, which has already served to coordinate joint measures being taken by the EU and the US in face of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.”

A whistleblower in the Parliament

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen has been invited to the European Parliament to discuss future impact of the EU rules regulating online platforms.  She will on May 18 meet with the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee in Brussels. Haugen last year gave information to the Wall Street Journal saying Facebook was more focused on making money than fighting misinformation. After a series of articles based on her info9rmation, Facebook announced it was re-branding and is now called Meta.

Haugen has earlier been invited to the US Senate and to the British Parliament.

The European Parliament´s committee will later in May visit Silicon Valley where MEPs will directly exchange with tech companies, local authorities and academia.

The Brussels meeting on Wednesday, 18 May 2022, 13.00-14.30 CEST
