Mare of Easttown, a real woman on the screen

Mare of Easttown: A female Columbo is born

If we were to describe Mare of Easttown in a nutshell, just picture a female detective Columbo: a very real person, with charms and flaws, with strong values but a willingness to ignore them at the same time, someone who succeeds and fails.

The hit is of course that we now see a real woman in such a role: a woman as many of us are, but rarely pictured on screen: full of successes and failures, full of problems and challenges, pretty and neglected, loved and hated. Mare of Easttown is a real person: if not ourselves, she is someone we all know.

Kate Winslet herself has talked very lovingly about her character, saying: ‘It was so great playing someone who doesn’t care what people think!’

‘I am so proud of my character: she is both disgusting and charming, she can be a pain in the ass and also your best friend, morally really sound and really corrupt at the same time’.

Plot: MARE OF EASTTOWN stars Kate Winslet as Mare Sheehan, a small-town Pennsylvania detective who investigates a local murder as life crumbles around her. MARE OF EASTTOWN is an exploration into the dark side of a close community and an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present.

The series has met such a success, that the police reached a point where they had to warn fans against trespassing, as they kept invading properties where the series was shot, in order to take selfies. The final episode drew four million viewers over Memorial Day weekend across HBO and HBO Max, with nearly three million viewers Sunday night (all platforms), marking a series high for both linear and digital, according to HBO. The finale also set the record as the most-watched episode of an Original Series on HBO Max during its first 24 hours of availability, besting the finales of recent hits The Undoing and The Flight Attendant over the same period of time.
