Netflix’s hidden gems – Five TV shows to watch this weekend
What should I watch now? That’s the eternal question when deciding to spend your free time in front of the TV. With so many options out there, shouldn’t it be easier to find something to watch, instead of scrolling Netflix’s homepage for hours and hours?
Recently, I was talking with a friend about how easy it is to get lost in the endless list of series, TV shows, films and documentaries streaming on the platform and end up having missed some hidden gems, not very popular but still definitely worth watching.
In this avalanche of proposals and options, you wouldn’t like to miss some extraordinary productions, whether series or films, would you?
Take a look at five less popular Netflix TV shows that are worth watching this weekend!
Sense8 (TV Series, 2015-2018)
A group of people around the world are suddenly linked mentally, and must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world’s order. The Wachowskis’ emotionally intense sci-fi TV series may be the best they’ve created since the trilogy of “The Matrix”. The plot follows a somewhat slow rhythm and sometimes may be confusing, but “Sense8” certainly deserves a look, mostly from the sci-fi genre enthusiasts.
Godless (TV Mini Series, 2017)
In the 1880s American West, murderous outlaw gang leader Frank Griffin hunts for ex-protege Roy Goode. Frank’s chase leads him to La Belle, New Mexico – a town inhabited, after a mining disaster, almost entirely by women. The seven-part miniseries, written and directed by Scott Frank and executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, is visually spellbinding and filled with standout performances.
Unbelievable (TV Mini Series, 2019)
Inspired by true events, the eight-episode limited series tells the incredible story of Marie, a teenager who was charged with lying about having been raped, and the two female detectives who followed the path to the truth. “Unbelievable” is a TV show about what happens when women use their voices, and how challenging it can be to figure out how and when to speak up.
Russian Doll (TV Series, 2019-)
Emmy-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne stars in this black comedy as Nadia, a young woman who is on a journey to attend her 36th birthday party in New York. But she gets caught in a mysterious loop as she repeatedly attends the same event and dies at the end of the night each time – only to wake up the next day unharmed as if nothing had happened. An allegorical series with many layers and many interpretations, definitely worth watching!
The Eddy (TV Mini Series, 2020)
A French club owner deals with the everyday chaos of running a live music venue in the heart of Paris. Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land) has found the right recipe to offer us outstanding musical dramas. History is played out in Paris and through Chazelle’s gloomy eyes we enter the magical world of jazz. A TV show strongly recommended for the nostalgic souls out there.
