Salman Rushdie’s new book as series on Substack
Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie is publishing his next book as a series on publishing platform Substack saying he hopes this means “a closer relationship with readers, to speak freely, without any intermediaries or gatekeepers”.
San Francisco-based online platform Substack, founded in 2017, provides publishing, payment, and analytics for subscription newsletters with journalists, writers etc sending their digital newsletters directly to subscribers.
Writers charge a subscription for their newsletters and the platform takes a commission, often 10%. The company also has a Pro scheme to attract some writers that the company is willing to up front during one year.
Rushdie is charging USD 6 per month for his Sea of Stories presenting it as “An ocean of stories by Salman Rushdie: I’ll be talking about stories I’ve read or seen, true stories, tall stories, stories about me, and some I just made up”.
“I have big news to share! SALMAN’S SEA OF STORIES launches today at http://salmanrushdie.substack.com . I’ll be telling stories about movies and books and who knows what else. And there will be exclusive new fiction from me as well. Come on over! It will be fun”, Rushdie wrote on Twitter.
Rushdie’s 1988 book, The Satanic Verses, became a worldwide news story as it was seen by many Muslims as blasphemous. The then Supreme Leader of Iran, the Ayatollah Khomeini, called for the author’s death.
However, Rushdie in an interview with the Guardian said he will not write about politics on Substack as it “takes over and obliterates everything else”.
