The value of unpaid household work
A Chinese court´s ruling in a divorce case has led to wide discussion on social media about the value of household work. A court in Beijing ordered a man to pay his wife 50 000 yuan or USD 7 700 for five years unpaid labour when they divorced. The heated discussions on social media is if this really is enough with many saying it for sure is not. One argument was that just a nanny in Beijing is yuan 50 000 for one year!
The couple got married in 2015 and five years later, the man filed for divorce with his wife not wanting it. However, she later requested compensation for household work arguing that the husband had not done any household work or childcare, the BBC reports from Beijing.
The judge told reporters that the division of a couple’s joint property after marriage usually entails splitting tangible property. “But housework constitutes intangible property value”.
The man was also ruled to pay monthly alimony of yuan 2 000 apart from the 50 000 for the unpaid household work.
