“There is Nothing for You Here” by Fiona Hill
She was a witness at the hearings during the first impeachment of Donald Trump. She served in the US National Security Council under three US Presidents as a specialist on Russian and European affairs. She was born the daughter of a miner in Bishop Auckland, County Durham in northern England. The title of the book is her father’s advice to get out of the mining district before it was too late.
“There is Nothing for You Here” her father Alf told his daughter Fiona Hill when all the jobs were vanishing in the mining district.
And she for sure followed his advice. She studied her way out. Via St Andrews University she went to the Soviet Union from where she got a scholarship to the US and Harvard as a Russia scholar. Her analyzes gave her a reputation that the White House found interesting.
The book tells her life story; it describes the White House under Trump; how she was called The Russia Bitch by colleagues. But most important, it is an analysis of the effects of deindustrialization and political populism in Russia, in the US and in Europe.
