Founder of SBTV Jamal Edwards dies
Jamal Edwards, founder of media platform SBTV that started as a YouTube channel where a number of new artists first performed, has died at the age of 31. Edwards has said he started his channel on a mobile phone while still at school and later developed it into an online youth broadcaster.
Among artists who started on on his SBTV are Ed Sheeran, Dave, Jessie J, Stormzy, Rita Ora, Krept & Konan, Bugzy Malone. His YouTube channel was launched in 2006 and now has more than 1.2 million subscribers.
“I always looked on grime like the punk movement, in terms of lyrics and rebellious attitude,” Edwards said in an interview with the Guardian a couple of years ago.
Edwards youth channel became successful and famous for its reach of audiences that other media companies struggled to find and Edwards made interviews with celebrities lite Prince Charles whose charity Edwards later became an ambassador for.
Edwards also made it a mission to work for better understanding of mental health problems. He was born in Luton in 1990 and grew up in Acton, west London.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted British music and entertainment “has lost one of its brightest stars”.
