Maria Ressa writing for The Atlantic
‘Τhe Atlantic’ has secured the Nobel Prize winner Maria Ressa as a contributing writer, the historic American magazine said in an announcement.
“Maria will write for us about democracy, press freedom, and the social web. We are exceedingly grateful for all that Maria has done for the cause of independent journalism, and we’re honored to be able to provide a home for some of her best writing”, said in The Atlantic’s press release, that was co-signed by editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg, executive editor Adrienne LaFrance, and editorial director Denise Wills.
Maria Ressa is the co-founder and CEO of Rappler, one of just a handful of news organizations in the Philippines that has openly criticized President Rodrigo Duterte and his policies, and as a result she has been arrested 10 times over a period of just two years. She won the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize and she is considered as a great symbol of a journalist fighting for freedom of the press.
The American magazine ‘The Atlantic’ was founded in Boston in the spring of 1857 and its mission statement was signed by many important American authors, like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, as a home for intellectual debate, but also in opposition to the great moral injustice of its time.
