Google signing agreement with 300 French newspapers
Google and French publisher Alliance de la Presse d’Information Générale, with close to 300 newspapers announced that they have signed an agreement where the search engine agrees to pay for using publishers’ content. The agreement on the remuneration of neighbouring rights (copyright under French law) is based on the EU’s new copyright directive that has been implemented in French legislation.
“This is an historic milestone in the implementation of these rights, and the culmination of negotiations initiated last September within the framework of the principles set by the French Competition Authority” the parties said in a joint statement.
“This agreement, which complies with the 12th July 2021 decision of the Competition Authority, relates exclusively to the remuneration of neighbouring rights. It establishes the principles according to which Google will negotiate individual license agreements and their remuneration with the members of the Alliance, on the basis of transparent and non-discriminatory criteria.”
Sébastien Missoffe, Vice-President and General Manager of Google France said: “These agreements signify our commitment to publishers and press agencies. In the following weeks, we will begin to remunerate the 300 press titles of the Alliance de la Presse d’Information Générale for the use of their press publications within the framework of the French law on neighbouring rights. These agreements open up new perspectives to contribute to the development of these press titles in the digital age”
Pierre Louette, CEO of Les Échos – Le Parisien Group and President of the Alliance de la Presse d’Information Générale, says: “These agreements are essential steps for the recognition and the effective implementation of the neighbouring right for press publishers, and the remuneration for the use of their online publications. They materialize the solidarity within the Alliance with the creation of a new category of sustainable income for publishers, after a long negotiation led in particular by Philippe Carli and the teams of the Alliance. »
