A competition focus on the market for streaming music
How is the radical change of the music market, with streaming services accounting for 80%, affecting consumers and competition? These are question for a planned study by the British Competition and Markets Authority.
After discussions about the development in the authority’s board, it has now contacted the government and the parliament’s committee for digital, culture, media and sports to outline its next steps.
“We want to do everything we can to ensure that this sector is competitive, thriving and works in the interests of music lovers”, said Andrea Coscelli, CEO of the authority.
“Over the past decade, the music industry has evolved almost beyond recognition, with streaming now accounting for more than 80% of all music listened to in this country. A market study will help us to understand these radical changes and build a view as to whether competition in this sector is working well or whether further action needs to be taken.”
The authority said it has a number of ongoing pieces of work promoting competition in digital markets. These include investigating Google’s privacy sandbox, Facebook’s use of advertising data and Apple’s AppStore.
