BBC resumes broadcasting from Russia

BBC News journalists in Russia have resumed their broadcasts. The management stopped their reporting a few days ago when Russia introduced a law with up to 15 years in jail for what the authorities could define as spreading fake news about the Russian army.

The number of companies shutting their operations in Russia continued to grow with consumer giant McDonalds saying it is closing its more than 800 shops in the country. Also Starbucks and Coca-Cola said they are closing operations in the country.

A large number of other Western news media have also decided to temporarily suspended reporting from Russia with reference to the new legislation.

The Washington-based Committee to Protect Journalists reports that at least 150 Russian journalists are believed to have left the country in the face of Moscow´s crackdown on independent Russian media.

BBC reported it has decided to resume work after “careful deliberation”:

“We have considered the implications of the new legislation alongside the urgent need to report from inside Russia.

“After careful deliberation we have decided to resume English language reporting from Russia this evening (Tuesday 8 March), after it was temporarily suspended at the end of last week.

“We will tell this crucial part of the story independently and impartially, adhering to the BBC’s strict editorial standards. The safety of our staff in Russia remains our number one priority.”
