Fact-checkers joining forces Ukraine war

Fact-checkers joining forces against disinformation about the war in Ukraine

Disinformation is part of modern warfare. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the fact-checker community has joined forces to fight disinformation. Swedish public service broadcaster SVT announced special efforts for fact-checked information about the war for children.

The international fact-checking community’s new #Ukraineacts database of fact checks already includes more than 400 entries from over 45 countries, Poynter Institute reports.

Clara Jiménez Cruz, CEO of Spanish non-profit Maldita.es, used a listserv belonging to Poynter International Fact-Checking Network, and united other fact-checkers to enter disinformation they have debunked. Spanish Maldita news organization aims at combating disinformation through fact-checking and data journalism. The Poynter fact-checking network comprises 120 fact-checking organisations.

“We know that when fact-checkers collaborate among themselves, the work is much more effective and we can also gather better information about which kind of disinformation is circulating”, Jiménez Cruz told Amaris Castillo, contributor to Poynter.org.

Maldita has developed ukrainefacts.org, a database that publishes fact checks on mis- and disinformation circulating in Ukraine. Also called #UkraineFacts, it is available to the public for browsing. There is also a map of the world that users can click on to read about debunked disinformation in different countries.

Addressing that children hear about the war, are worried and are vulnerable to disinformation, Swedish public service TV’s CEO, Hanna Stjärne, announced more resources for the company’s news for children.

She stresses the need for fact-checked and pedagogic journalism. The company’s extra efforts are addressing school children aged 8 to 14 years old and comprises text and video with explainers and factual information about the war. It is published on social media like TikTok, YouTube and other platforms with links to the company’s news for children and its app.
