Mixed reactions to Facebook being Meta

Facebook second – ‘meta’ first, says Zuckerberg

Verifying previously leaked information, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg announced the new name of his company: ‘meta’.

He explained it is a Greek word meaning “beyond” and expresses his perpetual need for creation.

From now on, the company will report and operate in two different segments: one for the family of apps and one for the work on future platforms; as Zuckerberg warned, his company is from now on metaverse-first, not Facebook-first, announcing that over time, users will not need a Facebook account to use the other services.

Zuckerberg is estimating that within the next decade, the metaverse will reach a billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce,

With a subtitle reference to Facebook’s recent troubles, the announcement is welcoming ‘new forms of governance’ to cover the needs for privacy and safety that should be part of the metaverse from day one.
