4m USD raised to support Ukrainian journalists covering the war

Money is pouring in for the Ukrainian journalists covering the invasion of their country. A fundraising campaign organized by journalism groups The Fix, Are We Europe, Jnomics and Media Development Foundation has raised more than USD  4 million in a little over two weeks, Nieman Lab reports.

”Of the $4 million raised between GoFundMe campaigns and direct donations, roughly USD 1.5 million has been raised for the Kyiv Independent and USD 2.5 million for other independent Ukrainian media.”

Among the numerous casualties of the war are also journalists reporting about the invasion and the fighting. The first known was Yevheniy Sakun, a cameraman for LIVE TV. According to reports, a Russian airstrike on a TV tower in Antopol, Rivne region, killed 9 people and 9 more were injured. This was announced by the head of the Rivne OVA Vitaly Koval.

US reporter and documentary-maker Brent Renaud was, according to news reports, shot and killed at a checkpoint in Irpin, outside of Kyiv, in an attack that also injured US photographer Juan Arredondo.

A vehicle carrying a news team with the US broadcaster Fox News was attacked near the village of Horenka, outside Kyiv, killing cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski and Ukrainian journalist Oleksandra Kuvshynova and injuring correspondent Benjamin Hall.
