Streaming TV is the trend – now also with CNN+
The focus on streaming television trend is once again stressed with CNN’s earlier announced streaming service CNN+ now launched. This change has over the last years has been clear in the US where cable TV earlier was the dominating platform but it has there gone from 9 in 10 households having it to just around half of them.
The CNN+, now launched in the US, does not include the CNN rolling news that still is on US cable TV. How it will be when the +-service is introduced in other parts of the world is not clear.
The now launched CNN+ is a subscription streaming service combining live news coverage, on-demand programming and interactive interviews.
“We are going to be the only global video-driven news subscription business,” CNN chief digital officer and head of CNN+ Andrew Morse said in an interview. ”Down the road, CNN+ may be bundled. But at launch it is a standalone product priced at $5.99 a month”, CNN reports.
”Eight daily newscasts and interview shows will go live throughout the day on weekdays, then be available on demand.” A dedicated team will cover breaking news and produce special reports with many of the same correspondents and analysts that appear on CNN.
”But nothing will change about the current CNN experience on TV or on CNN Digital. Anchors will continue helming their existing shows, available via cable and satellite, and reporters will continue publishing stories on CNN.com, the free ad-supported website.”
Cable-TV peaked around 2011 when more than 90% of US TV-household had a Pay-TV subscription, but has since gradually lost viewers to streaming.
CNN, that first launched in 1980, has recently struggled with management changes after CEO Jeff Zucker surprisingly announced that he was resigning from the cable news network effective immediately as he had failed to inform about having a relationship with one of his closest top managers. Former CBS executive Chris Licht has been appointed his successor.
