Google News returning to Spain after 7 years
Google announced that the company’s Google News will be re-introduced in Spain as the country is implementing the EU’s copyright directive into national legislation. Google closed the service in Spain in 2014 when the country introduced a legislation forcing the Google to have a collective licensing with publishers.
The new copyright directive gives publishers the right to negotiate directly with big tech companies using publishers’ journalistic content for commercial purposes like Google publishing advertising in connection with search results.
“Starting early next year, Google News will provide links to useful and relevant news stories, from a wide range of sources”, Fuencisla Clemares, Google VP Iberia, writes in a blog post.
“For journalists and publishers, Google News helps them be discovered by more readers and generate valuable free traffic. Over the coming months, we will be working with publishers to reach agreements which cover their rights under the new law.”
Clemares says the company will also “work towards bringing Google News Showcase to Spain, “a licensing program and new product experience which pays publishers to curate content for story panels across Google News and Discover.”
