Journalist killed in Russian shelling of Kyiv
Among the numerous casualties since Russia attacked Ukraine around four weeks ago are at least five journalists. The latest known victim is Russian journalist Oksana Baulina who was killed when she was covering Russian shelling of Kyiv where she was based.
She was working for Latvia-based independent website The Insider.
The Insider reported that another civilian died in the attack that killed Baulina, and two people accompanying her were wounded and hospitalized.
Before joining The Insider, Baulina worked for Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, until the organization was put on the list of extremist organizations in June 2021 and she was forced to leave Russia, according to The Insider’s statement.
The first journalist known to be killed during the war in Ukraine was Yevheniy Sakun, a cameraman for LIVE TV. According to reports, a Russian airstrike on a TV tower in Antopol, Rivne region, killed 9 people and 9 more were injured. This was announced by the head of the Rivne OVA Vitaly Koval.
US reporter and documentary-maker Brent Renaud was, according to news reports, shot and killed at a checkpoint in Irpin, outside of Kyiv, in an attack that also injured US photographer Juan Arredondo.
A vehicle carrying a news team with the US broadcaster Fox News was attacked near the village of Horenka, outside Kyiv, killing cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski and Ukrainian journalist Oleksandra Kuvshynova and injuring correspondent Benjamin Hall.
