Live streaming TV forecasted to get a new market lead

Five major US-based platforms will control 53% of the world’s 1.7 billion live streaming video subscriptions by 2026. That equates to a collective 910 million subscriptions by 2026; up from 585 million in 2021, according to UK-based Digital TV Research. Disney+ is forecasted to overtake Netflix 2027 to be the biggest on the market.

Netflix will remain the largest player, adding 53 million subscribers to reach 275 million subscribers by 2026.

Netflix announced it will publish two global Top 10 lists every Tuesday. One list is for English-language films and television shows and for non-English language shows. The ratings will be based on the hours viewed.

Korean drama “Squid Game,” tops the list of non-English language shows, with 42.8 million hours viewed during the week starting November 8.

Crime thriller “Narcos: Mexico” was No. 1 on the English language list, with 50.3 million viewing hours.

Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Our previous forecasts based on June 2021 results estimated that Disney+ would overtake Netflix in 2025. Based on the September 2021 results, we now expect that this will happen in 2027.”

BIGGEST WINNER

”Disney+ will be the biggest winner, adding 140 million subscribers between 2021 and 2026 to take its total to 271 million. About 102 million of Disney+’ subscribers (38% of the total) in 2026 will be in 13 Asian countries under the Hotstar brand.”

“Disney+ only started in six new countries during 2021. Delayed from 2021, the Eastern Europe launches will take place in 2022. This is likely to push back the remaining Asian launches to 2023.”

HBO Max is forecasted to have 83 million subscribers by 2026, up from 29 million by end-2021. Future launches include territories where it has pay TV operations: Eastern Europe in 2022 and the rest of Asia (probably in 2023).

KOREAN DRAMA

Netflix reported that the company to attract new subscribers during the third quarter of 2021, thanks primarily to its non-English language shows, with North Korean Squid Game becoming the platform’s most popular show to date. The company added 4.4 million users in the three months to 30 September, more than double the previous quarter, beating analysts’ estimates.
