Majority of Facebook and TikTok users are women
YouTube and Facebook are the most-widely used online platforms, according to a US fact sheet by Pew Research Center. Half of adults say they use Instagram. On Facebook, the majority are women, 78% versus 61% men, while the gender balance on YouTube is a bit better but with a majority for men, 87% versus 83% for women. Today, 96% say they use the internet.
Other platforms with a majority of users being women are:
- Pinterest, 61% women versus 19% men
- Snapchat 31% women versus 23% men
- WhatsApp 32% women versus 28% men
- TikTok 39% women versus 26% men
The vast majority of Americans – 98% – now own a cellphone of some kind. About nine-in-ten (91%) own a smartphone, up from 35% in the centre’s first survey of smartphone ownership in 2011.
92% of men say they own a smartphone versus 91% of women. Today, 15% of adults are “smartphone-only” internet users – meaning they own a smartphone but say they do not subscribe to a home broadband service.
