Maltese government responsible for murder of journalist
The inquiry into the assassination of investigative Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia has held the state of Malta responsible for her death, concluding that a collective culture of impunity was created from the highest echelons of power within Castille, the International Press Institute (IPI) reports.
IPI says it is vital that this is not seen as closure, but rather as the beginning of a process of national reconciliation.
“It is essential that the Maltese state accepts its collective role and responsibility in creating the necessary conditions and culture of impunity which led to Daphne’s assassination and establishes a clear path towards addressing the systematic failures outlined in the public enquiry.”
The enquiry says that there is an “unwarranted closeness” between big business and government.
Three men have been accused of the murder. One of them has been sentenced to 15 years in jail. The other two are waiting for the court procedure. A fourth man, a businessman, has been charged with complicity. He denies the accusation.
Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb when she left her home in October 2017. After an investigation, the prime minister, Joseph Muscat, resigned as some of his associates were said to be connected to the murder. Muscat denies all involvement.
Galizia was widely read investigating and fearlessly writing about corruption in business and politics.
