News agency organisation confirms suspension of TASS
The European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) has confirmed its earlier suspension of Russian state-owned news agency TASS for not respecting its standards. The agency was first suspended days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine with the news agency organization saying TASS under the circumstances is unable to provide unbiased news.
The confirmation of the suspension came during the EANA’s general assembly in Sarajevo, Bosnia, the alliance’s president Clemens Pig, CEO of Austrian news agency APA, told reporters, according to a text posted on LinkedIn by the organisation’s secretary general Alexandru Ion Giboi.
TASS was flouting one of the alliance’s “most important purposes … to carry on journalistic activities at the highest standard possible”, Giboi was quoted.
The alliance at its Sarajevo meeting also voiced full support for Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform. “We will continue to help and do whatever is in our human power to support Ukrinform, our colleagues and our friends there,” Giboi said.
EANA is a forum for cooperation and exchange of information and experiences among European news agencies. It comprises privately and publicly owned news agencies from 31 European countries, like French AFP, the Press Association (PA Media) from U.K., but also Turkey’s Anadolu and Azerbaijan’s Azertac.
The European news agency organisation was founded in 1956 by West European news agencies, as well as Anadolu Agency (Turkey) and Tanjug (Yugoslavia). In 1970, agencies behind the “iron curtain” were invited to join. EANA’s predecessor Agences Alliées was founded in 1924 and was active until World War II when the activities were discontinued.
EANA says its “aim is to secure that member news agencies can work as providers of unbiased news. EANA supports the principles of freedom of the press and shall strive to facilitate for member news agencies to work in accordance with these principles.”
