Setback for gaming fans in China

Epic Games’ popular game Fortnite has been shut down in China with the decision being published on Fortnite’s Chinese site. It is the third popular US service that recently has announced it is leaving the country.

LinkedIn and Yahoo have both of them said they are leaving China referring to Chinese authorities making business difficult.

Authorities have earlier announced strict rules limiting how long young gamers are allowed to be online which has a negative impact for gaming companies in the country.

When Microsoft-owned LinkedIn announced that it is closing its site in China, the company said it was “facing a significantly more challenging operating environment and greater compliance requirements in China. Given this, we’ve made the decision to sunset the current localized version of LinkedIn, which is how people in China access LinkedIn’s global social media platform, later this year.”

Chinese authorities has this year via imposed rules made it clear at that the government wants to make sure that Chinese big tech stay controlled not becoming too powerful.

When Chinese authorities fined the country’s gigantic online retailer Alibaba the equivalent of USD 2.75 billion for abusing its dominant position in the market, the company said it accepts the ruling and would “ensure its compliance”.

A number of other Chinese companies including Tencent, Baidu, Didi Chuxing, SoftBank and a ByteDance were recently fined for violating anti-competition rules.
