Facebook Oversight Board delays Trump account decision

Facebook Oversight Board’s “ruling” about the closing of ex-president Donald Trump’s accounts is delayed. It was expected to come on April 21, but the board has announced that it is delayed because of the amount of public responses over the case that the board needs more time to review.

Trump’s accounts at Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram were closed by the management  when a crowd stormed the US Capitol on January 6 as Trump’s messages were seen as inciting violence.

The case has been submitted to the board that comprises externals specialists from law, politics, media and academia. The board’s decision is expected to have wide consequences for future similar cases and will be part of the discussion about who should control the powerful social media.

The board said a decision can be expected “in the coming weeks”.
