Facebook using augmented reality for e-shopping
Continuing its emphasis on e-commerce, Facebook is expanding its “Shops” feature to WhatsApp in a number of countries and to Facebook Marketplace in the US. The company will also introduce personalized ads in its Shops service based on users’ shopping behaviour.
“Even as brick and mortar re-open in many countries, two-thirds of online shoppers say that they want to virtually try on products from the comfort of their home. To help shoppers get a better feel for the fit of a product before they purchase, we’re making it easier for brands to create AR try-on experiences in Shops through new API integrations with Modiface and Perfect Corp.”
“We’re also introducing new tools for brands to include AR product catalogues in ads that will automatically show relevant products to people based on their interests,” the company said in a blog post.
Shops was launched last year as a way to find and buy products on Facebook and Instagram. Facebook said it has 300 million monthly Shops visitors and 1.2 million monthly active Shops.
The company announced it will test in the near future an artificial intelligence tool called ‘visual search’ so users shopping on Instagram can click on items and find similar products in Shops.
