Key to unlock computers in ransomware attack
Software company Kaseya said it has “obtained” a decryptor for victims of the recent REvil ransomware attack. The company said it is using the decryptor together with customers impacted so that they back access to blocked computers.
The company did not say it it had paid for the decryptor. “We can confirm that Kaseya obtained the tool from a third party and have teams actively helping customers affected by the ransomware to restore their environments, with no reports of any problem or issues associated with the decryptor.”
“Kaseya is working with Emsisoft to support our customer engagement efforts, and Emsisoft has confirmed the key is effective at unlocking victims”, Kaseya said.
The ransomware attack affected hundreds of businesses globally with the suspected hackers demanding USD 70 million. Swedish supermarket chain Coop was forced to keep some 800 shops closed after cash register system stopped working. The attack also affected Swedish railway company and a big pharmacy chain.
Security company Huntress thinks Russia-linked REvil ransomware gang was behind the attack.
REvil’s site and payment portal vanished from the dark web shortly after the attack with observers guessing if it had been stopped by Russian or American security. President Joe Biden has discussed the ransomware attacks with his Russian colleague Vladimir Putin and demanded that Russia should stop hackers working from its territory.
