More Apple computer chips in a time of shortage

Apple has launched its M1Pro and M1Max computer chips that the company is using for its new MacBook Pro laptops. The company has for years used chips made by Intel but last year introduced its first computers using chips made by Apple.

The launch of new chips come at a time where the world is discussing how the shortage of chips is affecting all types of production from cars to smartphones and computers.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has earlier warned markets that the shortage of chips could affect the production of iPhones and other products. The company´s shares recently fell after news reports that the company was cutting down on production during the last quarter of 2021 because of the shortage.

Commentators were positive to the company´s launching of the new chips but were not convinced that it would make Apple independent of the crisis but agreed it was a step in the right direction.

M1 Pro and M1 Max are by far the most powerful chips Apple has ever built, the company said in its presentation.

“M1 has transformed our most popular systems with incredible performance, custom technologies, and industry-leading power efficiency. No one has ever applied a system-on-a-chip design to a pro system until today with M1 Pro and M1 Max,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies.

“With massive gains in CPU and GPU performance, up to six times the memory bandwidth, a new media engine with ProRes accelerators, and other advanced technologies, M1 Pro and M1 Max take Apple silicon even further, and are unlike anything else in a pro notebook.”
