European information and communication technology (ICT) spending will total $1.1 trillion in 2024 and will reach more than $1.3 trillion by 2027, recording a five-year (2022-2027) compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3%. Software and business services remain the main drivers fuelled by the need for remote work, security and accelerating adoption of artificial intelligence, according to a forecast by International Data Corporation (IDC).
Stop spyware used against journalists and establish emergency, short-term or work visas for threatened journalists who have to leave their countries. These are among recommendations in the Council of Europe’s press freedom report 20
“People don’t come to Facebook for news and political content”, Facebook owner Meta says in a statement. The company is closing Facebook News, a dedicated tab for news content, in the US and Australia as the company has already announced it is doing in the UK, France and Germany and other countries. Meta says this is “to better align our investments to our products and services people value the most”.
It will take another 90 years to reach global chief executive gender parity and another 50 years to reach the same parity for chairs of boards with the current speed of development. Just 8.4% of the world’s boards are chaired by women and 6% of CEOs are women, according to a report from consultancy Deloitte on International Women’s Day.
Only 24% of the 174 top editors across 240 major online and offline news outlets are women despite that, on average, 40% of journalists are women. In 2023, this figure was 22% across the same markets, a survey by Reuters Institute shows. Among 33 new top editors appointed this year and last, 24% are women.
