The Week That Was: IT and Media news week 11

281 women journalists were attacked in the European Union and candidate countries last year. Women journalists more commonly face verbal attacks than their male colleagues,  according to partners in the Media Freedom Rapid Response. More women journalists are attacked online.

Female founders in the US and Europe had record-high shares of VC capital raised in 2023, even as a decline in deals made the business of raising money the toughest it’s been in years, financial data firm PitchBook reports.

With the spotlight on the movie Oppenheimer’s and all the other Oscars, one less hyped award should also be noted and celebrated: “20 Days in Mariupol” that got an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film. It is a first-person report on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. AP’s AP Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace described awarding the film as a testament to the importance of eyewitness journalism.

Moms on TV are white, young, and thin. Over three times as many moms are desirable as those who are  unattractive. Only 1.8% are fat, 6.2% are queer, and no moms are disabled. These are results from a study of US-made TV programmes by Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
