The Week That Was: IT and Media news week 16

AI-produced fake naked pictures on social media is a growing problem. Two cases with fake pictures of celebrities are now up to be scrutinized. One shows a well known person naked and the other one is a pornographic picture of a woman and man. Persons who posted the pictures on Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram have turned to Meta’s oversight board complaining that the pictures were taken down. The board says it selected these cases to assess if Meta’s policies and its enforcement practices are effective at addressing explicit AI-generated imagery.

Times of crises and breaking news – like now – are when we have less defence against fake news and other forms of manipulated information. Information consumers are more open to deceptive content when scared or during fast-breaking events, a study from Microsoft shows.

Global electronic waste is rising five times faster than the recycling of e-waste, according to a UN report on Global E-waste Monitor 2024. If countries could bring recycling rates to 60% by 2030, the benefits – including through minimizing human health risks – would exceed costs by more than US $38 billion.

A gap in how often men and women scientist’s work gets cited can explain why women earn less in science. There is strong evidence that women are not cited less per article than men, but that women accumulate fewer citations over time and at the career level. Cary Wu, Associate Professor of Sociology at York University, argues in a blog post published by LSE.  A focus on research productivity is key to understanding and closing the gender citation gap, he concludes.
