News consumers are not so comfortable with media using AI, especially when it comes to ‘hard’ news stories, a new survey shows. Could experimenting with AI be negative for public trust in news? AI media generation startups got close to 90% more venture capital (VC) funding in the first quarter this year. While big tech giants are making content generation a cornerstone of their AI initiatives, startups are raising record sums to bring AI-generated visuals to enterprise clients, financial data firm PitchBook says in a report.
Online platforms are increasingly important as a source for news. Only 22% identify news websites or apps as their main source of online news – down 10 percentage points on 2018. Depressing news like the wars in Ukraine and Gaza have increased news avoidance with 39% in a Reuters Institute survey saying they often or sometimes avoid the news – up from 29% in 2017.
Women in advertising have increased over the past 18 years and the representation of people of colour has more than doubled but queer characters remain underrepresented in advertising, Geena Davis Institute for Gender in Media says in a report that comprises marketing films 2006-2023.
