A ”separate space for real-time updates and public conversations”. That’s how Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg describes the company’s new service Threads that got several million registered users within a few hours after launch. The Twitter-like service hopes to benefit from the confusing management of Twitter by its new owner Elon Musk. Twitter’s new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, is stressing her platform as a source for real-time information following Meta’s Threads’ exceptional growth. Speculation has started if Threads can be a platform for news and news media.
Most newsrooms have already experimented with generative AI technologies like ChatGPT, but not necessarily to create content. Setting ethical guidelines and debiasing techniques seems to be the most difficult area for many newsrooms. The use cases are quite diverse: code writing, summaries, enhancing headlines and SEO, professor Charlie Beckett, founding director of LSE JournalismAI project, writes in a blog post presenting preliminary results from a survey.
With the first half of 2023 in the books, unicorn creation remains mired in a slump not seen in years. Only 44 billion-dollar startups were minted in the first six months of the year, the lowest number since the first half of 2017, a compilation by financial data firm PitchBook shows. Information technology companies are by far the biggest category of unicorns, accounting for about 41% of all unicorns created in 2023.
US companies dominate TV and video entertainment for kids in Europe. Around half of all children’s TV channels in Europe are US-owned (48%) and the same goes for 59% of entertainment subscription video-on-demand services, a new survey from European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe, shows.
