Creating expectation of violence breaking out in Paris during the Olympic Games is a focus for Russian disinformation campaigns.  French President Emmanuel Macron, the International Olympic Committee and this summer’s Games in Paris are targets, Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Centre says in a new report. With the Olympic Games opening ceremony on July 26th, this malign activity is expected to intensify.

Over 40% of firms expect that using AI will have a positive impact on turnover, profits, training and resilience. About 22% expect a positive impact on employment compared to 13% expecting a negative effect but most firms are unsure or expect zero impact of AI on jobs. The data are from a survey among British companies by LSE’s Centre for Economic Performance and the Confederation of British Industry. 

GenAI and other AI technologies are contributing to increased security budgets in 2024. “GenAI brings pressure to increase cybersecurity budgets on two fronts: to secure an organisation’s development and use of GenAI applications and to use GenAI assistants to uplevel security analysts”, says Frank Dickson, vice president at market research firm International Data Corporation.

Spyware attacks on journalists continue! A new investigation identifies seven additional Russian- and Belarusian-speaking journalists and opposition activists living in exile in Europe who were targeted with the NSO Group’s  Pegasus spyware. Many of the targets publicly criticized the Russian government, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The investigation was made by Citizen Lab at Toronto university in collaboration with Access Now and independent digital security expert Nikolai Kvantiliani.
