Online threats of death, rape, and physical violence against women in politics and public life have become alarmingly common, and the rise of artificial intelligence may further intensify the scale and reach of such online abuse, UN Women says in an explainer for the the International Day of Democracy and in the run-up to the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for the achievement of gender equality.
TV and radio news are the most trusted by news consumers but the majority anyway turn to online sources for news. And the explanation is that people turn to social media for news. Online news sources are now as widely used as TV news, which saw steep decline last year, according to a survey by UK media regulating authority Ofcom.
Politicians in the US and the European Union have tried to stop Chinese-owned TikTok but public support, at least in the US, for a TikTok ban is low and it continues to decline. Many US adults are sceptical or unsure if such a ban will happen, according to a new Pew Research Centre survey. The European Parliament has earlier adopted recommendations to ban TikTok at all levels of national government and in the EU institutions. US administrations under both Donald Trump and Joe Biden have insisted that TikTok US operations are sold to US-owners or banned (thou Trump has later changed his mind).
Close to 50% of gamers worldwide are women but the business is dominated by men! More than three billion people worldwide play digital games and 46% of them are women. Despite this diverse community of gamers, their reflection on screen is significantly lacking, US-based Geena Davis Institute on gender in media says. The institute has now published The GDI Playbook with ideas on how to get a better gender balance in gaming business.
