Governments in the EU should in exceptional cases be allowed to use spyware for surveillance of journalists. This may only be justified as a ‘last resort’ measure, on a case-by-case basis, and if ordered by an independent judicial authority to investigate a serious crime, such as terrorism or human trafficking, the European Parliament decided.. A proposal to stop this right to surveil journalists failed. The European Media Freedom Act was adopted by 448 votes in favour, 102 against and 75 abstentions. Next step is that the Parliament negotiates with governments in the European Council on the final shape of the law.

The Ukrainian government is under near-constant digital attack. “It is clear cyber will continue to play an integral role in future armed conflict, supplementing traditional forms of warfare”. Google says in a report about cyber security. Microsoft reports that in the past year, cyberattacks have touched 120 countries, fuelled by government-sponsored spying and with influence operations (IO) also rising. “At times, nearly half of these attacks targeted NATO member states”, Microsoft says.

22% ($84 billion) of all online ad spend is lost due to ad fraud in 2023 and it is projected to reach over $170 billion in 5 years, a report from US analyst firm Juniper Research’s shows. Fraudsters capitalize on the use of AI by using algorithms to create bots and malware that can mimic human behaviour, the report says. 

Only about 30% of game-developers globally are women but close to 50% of gamers are women, Geena Davis Institute of Gender in Media points out in a report arguing for better diversity in the gaming industry. “Improving representation in video games will require a shift within the development side of the gaming industry to facilitate more diverse teams.” . 

The world’s five biggest science and technology (S&T) clusters are now located in East Asia, with China emerging as the country with the greatest number of clusters. Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore, the US and the UK are the world’s most innovative economies in 2023, according to WIPO’s Global Innovation Index (GII).
