There are signs that the enthusiasm for investing in generative AI is getting weaker. “Generative AI continues to elicit considerable investment from VCs and tech giants, but there are signs that enthusiasm is waning”, financial data firm PitchBook says in a report. Investors acknowledge the technology’s promise but say they are reassessing the utility of generative AI applications and threats posed by larger players, PitchBook said.

“The war between Israel and Hamas has accelerated the spread of misinformation and broadened its reach due to graphic and emotional visuals, a deeply political conflict whose repercussions are felt around the world and a wealth of unreliable sources”, Alex Mahadevan,  director of the Poynter Institute’s digital media literacy initiative MediaWise, writes in a blog post. 

Closing gender gaps can help countries recover from the global economic crisis, a report from the International Monetary Fund says. However, without a significant step up in policy efforts, gender gaps may in fact never close, the IMF says in a research paper.

Microsoft completed its $69bn takeover of Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard in what is described as the gaming industry’s biggest ever deal. The announcement came after months of protests from authorities in the UK and US while the EU Commission gave its OK to the deal at an early stage. Authorities have claimed Microsoft would be too dominant in the gaming market. Microsoft made a number of commitments to satisfy the concerns.

Claudia Goldin, American economic historian, gets this year’s Nobel prize in economics for her work on gender pay gap. The award comes the same year as World Economic Forum estimates it will take another 131 years to reach full gender parity if improvements continue at the present modest speed and the average gender pay gap in the EU is 13%. “Claudia Goldin’s research has given us new and often surprising insights into women’s historical and contemporary roles in the labour market”, the Nobel Prize foundation said/.
