An agreement on the European Media Freedom Act was reached between the European Parliament and governments in the European Council shortly before the Christmas holiday. The new law includes rules on transparency of ownership and ban on forcing journalists to disclose sources and use of spyware against them, except in strictly defined cases. The European Federation of Journalists welcomed the agreement stressing that the final version no longer refers to the possibility of spying on journalists on the basis of vague “national security” imperatives.
Enterprises will more than double the worldwide investment in GenAI solutions in 2024 from $19.4 billion in 2023 and reach $151.1 billion in 2027 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 86.1% over the 2023-2027 period, International Data Corporation (IDC) says in an updated forecast.
The European Commission has opened a formal investigation of if X (earlier called Twitter) breached the Digital Services Act (DSA) in areas linked to risk management, content moderation, dark patterns, advertising transparency and data access for researchers. These are the first formal proceedings launched by the Commission to enforce the new EU framework for online platforms’ responsibility. The Commission has earlier said that the recently implemented EU digital acts means big tech companies can no longer say they are “too big to care”.
Meta’s Oversight Board changed the company’s decision to remove graphic content from the Israel-Hamas war. In two cases, the Board overturned Meta’s original decision to remove the content from its platforms. The company restores the posts with a warning screen. The Board says it had selected the cases because of the importance of freedom of expression in conflict situations.
