The Week That Was: IT and Media news week 52

The global focus on generative artificial intelligence has emphasised the need for giant amounts of data to train the software. Publishers’ archives are one attractive source for big tech companies developing software but publishers are stepping up their demand to get paid for this new use of their data. The latest example is the New York Times that is suing OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, and Microsoft that is OpenAI’s biggest investor. Others like Springer and Associated Press have reached  what are probably profitable agreements with Open AI. 

An agreement on the European Media Freedom Act was reached between the European Parliament and governments in the European Council shortly before the Christmas holiday. The new law includes rules on transparency of ownership and funding and ban on forcing journalists to disclose sources and use of spyware against them, except in strictly defined cases. 

The worldwide PC market has suffered badly the last two years, but despite this unprecedented trend, a market rebound is expected in 2024. This is partly explained by integration of AI capabilities in PCs, according to a new forecast by International Data Corporation (IDC).

The Israel-Hamas has been another dominating war story and the statistics encouragingly show that historical explainers have been among top interest stories. “The standout social story of 2023 was undoubtedly the missing Titan submersible. Titan submersible imploded during a voyage to the Titanic, killing all five people on board.
