56% of chief executives globally report efficiency gains by using generative AI while 34% say it has improved profitability and 32% report revenue increases. CEOs are more likely to say GenAI has led to headcount increases than decreases. Almost 60% of CEOs around the world expect global economic growth to increase over the next 12 months, according to consultancy PwC’s annual global CEO survey.
European journalists and media companies face an increasingly hostile environment. There were at least 1 548 press freedom violations during last year impacting 2 567 media-related persons or entities in 35 countries, up from 1 153 violations in 2023, according to the annual report from The Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR). Blocking of journalistic activity and intimidation and threatening of media workers were the most prominent types of violations followed by discrediting, harassment, insults, and bullying.
Social media is the top source of political and social issues for young EU citizens. 42% of those aged 16-30 agree that social media is the top source with television second (39%). The preference for TV is particularly noticeable among those aged 25-30, who are also more likely to use online news platforms and radio (30% and 19% respectively) than 16-18 year-olds (21% and 13%), a new Eurobarometer shows.
The global Artificial Intelligence infrastructure market is on track for unprecedented growth and will surpass $200 billion USD in spending by 2028, according to a forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC). The US leads the global AI infrastructure market, accounting for 59% of the total spending in the first half of 2024 followed by China (20%), Asia-Pacific (13%), and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) (7%).
As technology mediates more of our daily lives, it is also being weaponised to harm women and girls in new and alarming ways. Although not a new phenomenon, technology-facilitated gender-based violence has surged rapidly in recent years, posing serious threats to the safety and well-being of women and girls everywhere, UN Women says in a statement.
