The Week That Was: IT and Media news week 43

Digital influence operations by Russia, China, and Iran continue as the US presidential election is getting closer. “Russian actors continue to integrate generative AI into their content, Iranian groups ramp up their preparations to enable cyber-influence operations, while Chinese actors shift focus to several down-ballot candidates and members of Congress”. Microsoft says in a security report.

Expectations of what GenAI can achieve will drop. “The reality of what can be accomplished with current GenAI models, and the state of CIO’s data will not meet today’s lofty expectations”, says John-David Lovelock, analyst at market research firm Gartner. The statement is made in connection with the company forecasting that worldwide IT spending will total $5.74 trillion in 2025, an increase of 9.3% from 2024.

Cyber threats are evolving. Threats related to data loss have impacted 28% of organisations in 2024, up by 14% vs last year. 57% of companies think they will increase their budget for cybersecurity over the next 12 to 24 months, according to consultancy Deloitte Global’s survey Future of Cyber.

Comment is king, Damian Radcliffe, Professor in Journalism at University of Oregon writes quoting a new study and describing how news media can be successful on the fast developing social media network TikTok. “For media companies, this may mean that engagement on TikTok should go beyond just creating content. It might require active involvement in the comment sections, given that this is where audiences spend a great deal of time and energy.”
