Polish President Andrzej Duda vetoed the country´s new controversial media law that was approved by the Parliament a couple of days before Christmas in an unexpected sudden move. The government says the law will stop foreign powers from taking control over the country’s broadcasters while critics say the idea is to block the country’s biggest independent TV channel – TVN24 – that is owned by US company Discovery’s European operations.
Independent Hong Kong news website Stand News closed its operations shortly after police raided its newsroom and arrested seven of its members. Stand News has been one of the last major independent news outlets in Hong Kong since Jimmy Lai’s Apple Daily newspaper was forced to close last summer after Lai himself and several of his staff were jailed.
Esports focused Riot Games agreed to pay USD 100 million to settle a gender-based discrimination class-action lawsuit with California state agencies and current and former women employees. The lawsuit was filed in 2018 by two now-former employees accusing the company of gender discrimination, sexual harassment and misconduct.
A total of 45 journalists were killed in 2021 in connection with their work, International Press Institute said calling on authorities to end impunity for these crimes and to ensure the protection of journalists, who must be able to do their work freely and safely. Of these 45 journalists, 40 were men and five were women.
