Negotiations about the proposed European Markets and Services Acts will start first half of next year with governments in the European Council under French presidency. Both proposals are now more or less approved by the European Parliament. They are meant to limit big tech’s dominance by increasing competition and putting pressure on platforms to fight disinformation.
The Polish Parliament approved the government’s proposed controversial new media law in an unexpected move shortly before Christmas. The government says the law will stop foreign powers from taking control over the country’s broadcasters while critics say the idea is to block the country’s biggest independent TV channel.
Meta disabled seven “cyber mercenaries” who targeted more than 50 000 people across the internet in more than 100 countries. Meta said “cyber mercenaries” claim that their services only target criminals and terrorists while targeting is in fact indiscriminate and includes journalists, dissidents, critics of authoritarian regimes, families of opposition and human rights activists.
Google promised to “negotiate in good faith” with press publishers and news agencies on how to compensate them for using their journalistic content. The company also said it would propose how to start paying within three months after negotiations started. Tough talks with the French competition authority persuaded Google to announce a softer standpoints than earlier stated.
Total digital publishing revenue was up 31% in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year, UK-based Association of Online Publishers and Deloitte reported. 84% of the association’s board members report positive revenue growth. Respondents say new products are a priority.
Social media platform Reddit announced that it has taken the first step to register at the stock exchange. “The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the proposed offering have not yet been determined”, the company said.
