The week that was: the 9 things you need to know

Two journalist giants – one quite tall and the other rather much less tall- were standing together in Oslo receiving the Nobel Peace prize for their courageous fight for freedom of expression: Maria Ressa, founder and editor of Philippine website Rappler and Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of Russian Novaya Gazeta.

Amazon Italy was fined Euro 1.13 billion by Italy´s anti-trust authority saying the company has abused its market dominance and harmed competitors in e-commerce logistics services.

Google owner Alphabet, Meta, earlier Facebook and Amazon account for 80-90% of the global total, advertising company GroupM Global said in a forecast. The median advertising market is expected to grow by 19.4% in 2021 and 9.1% in 2022.

The global ad market will grow 9.1% in 2022, after a 15.6% growth in 2021, according to advertising company Zenith´s forecast. Global adspend will grow 5.7% in 2023 and 7.4% in 2024. Social media adspend will overtake TV next year.

80% of money spent on Google Play and 60% of iOS revenue come from gamers. The app economy keeps growing, measurement and analyze firm App Annie says in a report. In 2021, total spend is on target to rise by nearly 25% to hit USD135 billion.

The number of reporters jailed for their work hit a new global record of 293 in 2021, up from a revised total of 280 last year. At least 24 journalists were killed because of their coverage so far this year; 18 others died in circumstances too murky to determine whether they were specific targets, the Committee to Protect Journalists said.

Microsoft disrupted a China-based hacking group that the company calls Nickel. Websites that Nickel was using to attack organizations in the United States and 28 other countries around the world have been closed after a court agreed with a request from the company.
