The European Parliament and Council agreed on new EU rules to limit the market power of big online platforms – the Digital Markets ACT. The new rules are expected to come into force this autumn. Commission said the rules are among the first initiatives of its kind to comprehensively regulate the gatekeeper power of the largest digital companies.
EU and the US agreed in principle on the controversial transfer of data between the European Union and the US. American companies have said EU-regulations are too strict could force US-companies to stop businesses in Europe. The negotiators said the agreement addresses the data protection and privacy concerns raised by the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Google opened up for developers to include their own payment system in apps. Spotify and Google said that users who have downloaded Spotify from the Google Play Store will be presented with a choice to pay with either Spotify’s payment system or with Google Play Billing. Google and Apple have been criticized for forcing developers to use the giants´ own payment systems.
TikTok is feeding false and misleading content about the war in Ukraine to users within 40 minutes of their signing up to the app, regardless of whether they run any searches on the platform, according to NewsGuard that rates the credibility of news and information websites.
Among the numerous casualties since Russia attacked Ukraine around four weeks ago are at least five journalists. The latest known victim is Russian journalist Oksana Baulina who was killed when she was covering Russian shelling of Kyiv. She was working for Latvia-based independent website The Insider and had left Russia because of its restrictive media legislation.
The European Union has fallen behind in the global race for tech leadership. There is a risk that standards will be developed elsewhere in the future, often by non-democratic actors, while the EU needs to act as a global standard-setter in AI, according to the EU Parliament’s Committee on Artificial Intelligence.
