Singing the blues in February

Music lovers are most melancholic in February and happiest in July, Economist reports basing the statement on statistics from music streaming company Spotify, which offers 50 million tracks to 270 million users in more than 70 countries.

Spotify uses an algorithm that classifies a song’s “valence”, or how happy it sounds, on a scale from 0 to 100. (Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” gets a stonking 97; Radiohead’s “Creep” a measly 10.)
Comparing this classification and number of songs, the Economist found that the most miserable melodies are played in February, while the sunniest songs are playing in July. Strikingly. The magazine reports that this is also the case in the southern hemisphere and countries close to the equator!
