Facebook tests display ads into VR games

Having ads in virtual reality is a big step for Facebook as it looks for new platforms for advertising. The company has announced it will begin testing advertisements that will appear within the company’s Oculus virtual reality headsets.

The company showed off how this new format would look to players wearing the VR goggles, and they appear like billboards, only virtual.

The Oculus headset ads will first appear in the shooter game Blaston from Resolution Games. Ads will also begin appearing in two other Oculus apps over the coming weeks, Facebook said.

The ads would be a way to help game developers make money from their creations. Facebook will share in the revenue, much like it shares in ads delivered to third-party videos from publishers on Facebook and Instagram.

As explained by Oculus: “Our primary focus at Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) is to bring more people into VR, advance the consumer experience, and make progress on our longer-term augmented reality initiatives. We’re also exploring new ways for developers to generate revenue – this is a key part of ensuring we’re creating a self-sustaining platform that can support a variety of business models that unlock new types of content and audiences. It also helps us continue to make innovative AR/VR hardware more accessible to more people.”
