Belgian media groups DPG and Rossel buy RTL Belgium
Belgian DPG Media and Groupe Rossel agree to buy RTL Belgium for €250 million.
The agreement is subject to regulatory approvals and expected to be finalised in Q4.
RTL Belgium operates three free TV channels – RTL-TVI (family, general interest), Club RTL (children, sports, classic movies and series) and Plug RTL (fiction, young culture, reality TV) – in the French-speaking part of the country. Its radio stations comprise Bel RTL (talk, general interest), Radio Contact (music) and the digital station Mint (pop rock music). The business unit also operates the streaming service RTL play and the news website RTLInfo.be.
The sale marks part of RTL Group’s European-wide consolidation efforts, which include the recently announced merger of its French network M6 with TF1 and the deal with John de Mol’s Talpa Network that will create a unified cross-media group join the Netherlands.
European Broadcaster RTL is owned by Bertelsmann, the parent company of Fremantle, has announced an ongoing strategy to create “local-language champions” across the continent.
DPG Media Group is a Belgian media company also active in the Netherlands and Denmark. It is owned by the Van Thillo family and employs some 6,000 people.
Groupe Rossel is a major media group in the French-speaking part of Belgium, but also owns several newspapers in France. The daily newspaper Le Soir is one of their main and most successful publications.
