French broadcasters merging to fight off US competitors

The two biggest private broadcasters in France announced that they are merging. TF1 and M6 said the decision is motivated by challenges from global platforms and that joining forces is needed to ensure the long-term independence of French content creation.

AT&T and Discovery recently announced that they are creating a new streaming giant for home entertainment and US media reports that Amazon wants to buy MGM Studios for its streaming service Prime.

TF1 and M6 would together hold more than 50% of France’s TV advertising market and nine free TV channels.

The merger will be investigated by French competition authorities and is expected to be monitored by broadcasters all over Europe as US-owned streaming services market their offers more aggressively in most countries.

Streaming services like Netflix and its competitors have been booming during the pandemic when people have been spending so much time at home. However, recent mergers and aggressive marketing of streaming home entertainment is seen as companies being worried about cancellations when other entertainment markets are opening up as the pandemic is getting under better control and movie theatres are allowed to open.
