Google: What do consumers search post-COVID?

As COVID-19 vaccinations are rolling out across the world, consumers are preparing for the post-COVID life. The Google Ads Research and Insights team analysed billions of recent search queries to understand the current trends in consumer behaviour.

Google’s analysis showed that many people are anticipating reopening safely and getting to travel again, searching for experiences like “getaways near me,” “open now near me,” “place to visit near,” and “international flights.”

Similarly, there is an increase in search queries related to style and beauty, as consumers look for inspiration to help revamp their appearance for getting back out into the world.

People are also seeking advice and inspiration for what to do with their money, with growing searches for “app send and receive money,” “buy today,” “luxury modern,” and “how to invest.”

People ready to travel again

According to the analysis, consumers are looking forward to traveling again and have started planning their future trips.

Key findings:

  • Searches for “getaways near me” have grown globally by over 100% YoY.
  • Searches for “international flights” have grown globally by over 60% YoY.
  • Searches for “now near me” have grown globally by over 100% YoY.
  • Searches “place to visit near” have grown globally by over 200% YoY.

People looking to revamp their style

As COVID-19 restrictions ease across the world, many people are gearing up to re-enter their social circles – and they want to do so with an updated look.

Key findings:

  • Image searches for “trendy” have grown globally by over 100% YoY.
  • Image searches for “hairstyles over 50” have grown globally by over 400% YoY.
  • Searches for “short natural haircuts” have grown globally by over 200% YoY.
  • Image searches for “simple hair style men” have grown globally over 500% YoY.

Consumers ready to spend

Google’s analysis also showed that, now that economies start to recover, consumers are searching where to invest their money.

Key findings:

  • Searches for “how to invest” have grown globally by over 70% YoY.
  • Image searches for “luxury modern” have grown globally by over 300% YoY.
  • Searches for “app send and receive money” have grown globally by over 40% YoY.
  • Searches for “buy today” have grown globally by over 70% YoY.

What apps are they looking to download?

As people are preparing for the post-COVID-19 life, they are also deciding which activities they want to do online, favoring apps that help streamline their day to day tasks.

  • Searches for “flight booking app” have grown globally by over 70% YoY.
  • Searches for “online shopping app download” have grown globally by over 300% YoY.
  • Searches for “free dating apps without payment” have grown globally by over 100% YoY.
  • Searches for “trading apps” have grown globally by over 200% YoY.
