The Week That Was: IT and Media news week 11

Women sports on TV are attracting advertisers! Women’s sports saw record growth across every major TV benchmark last year. Overall advertiser spend and ad impressions more than doubled from 2023, TV advertising US research firm EDO says in a new report. “This explosive growth spanned every women’s sports category, from NCAA college basketball, lacrosse, and gymnastics to US Open tennis and the WNBA”, writes Laura Grover, the company’s SVP.

The share of women working with European TV fiction has increased since 2015, but only by a modest 4% and the gender gap is still impressive. Overall, the share of women in all roles increased from 23% in 2015-2018 to 27% in 2019-2023). With the present speed of improvement, gender parity in producing European TV fiction will be reached in 2046, data from the European Audiovisual Observatory shows.

The gaming industry should pay more attention to women and older people two studies show! Close to 50% of gamers worldwide are women but the business is dominated by men and portrayal of 50-plus people in mainstream video games remains limited. More than three billion people worldwide play digital games. 46% of them are women and older players represent a significant and growing portion of people who play video games. Despite this diverse community of gamers, their reflection on screen is significantly lacking, US-based Geena Davis Institute on gender in media says.

Most of the largest publicly traded alternative asset managers in the US have removed significant portions of language related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from their annual filings to the SEC authority, a study by US financial data firm PitchBook shows. The most significant changes appear between 2023 and 2024. President Donald Trump’s executive order to stop federal DEI programs had a massive trickle-down effect, PitchBook reports.

The necessity of closing the digital gender gap is emphasized in a declaration adopted by the UN’s commission on the status of women. It underscores women’s and girls’ right to education, particularly in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). The statement is marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration to respect, protect, and champion the rights, equality, and empowerment of women and girls.
