Μicrosoft acquired programmatic advertising marketplace Xandr from AT&T. At the same time Microsoft and Taboola announced a strategic cooperation to create an audience network. The actions are clear indications that Microsoft is hoping to develop into a bigger challenger for Google in the programmatic advertising space, as the announcement includes a direct reference to privacy practices and publishers’ monetization opportunities beyond the third-party cookies.
The World Economic Forum decided to defer its Annual Meeting in Davos with reference to “continued uncertainty over the omicron outbreak. The plan was to hold it in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland between January 17 and 21. It is now planned for early summer without any specific dates given. Instead of the January summit, participants will join a series of State of the World sessions with global leaders online focusing on “shaping solutions to the world´s most pressing challenges”.
Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) ordered Apple to adjust its App Store’s payment rules. The Dutch authority says Apple must adjust “the unreasonable conditions in its App Store”. Apple is forcing developers to use the Store’s built in payment system and to pay a commission of 15 – 30% to Apple. Developers cannot add their own payment system with users paying directly to the developer of the app.
TikTok is the 2021 big winner according to Cloudflare’s annual rankings. The Chinese-owned TikTok.com overtook Google.com as the top domain ranking and also pushed down Facebook.com as the most popular social media destination measured by Internet traffic. However, measured by users, Facebook is still, by far, the largest.
